The lesson review questions were yes or no questions and we helped the fish swallow all the Jonahs by answering the question correctly.

In one of our classes, we are putting together notebooks this quarter. The first page lists all the lessons for the quarter. The next one is the first memory verse for the quarter. The phrases are on velcro so students can mix them up and work on putting them back in order as they memorize the verse. We added the Jonah page this week. Students wrote parts of the story of Jonah on fish shaped pages to form a fish book.

Bulletin Boards

These are the bulletin boards that we put up for our class for the beginning of the school year. I teach 3/4 year old class at Sunshine Day School.

The bunch of grapes are purple paper plates. The leaves and vines are just butcher paper. If you see a tree and someone tells you it is a fruit tree, how do you know what kind it is? By the fruit you see on it. It’s the same with our lives. How do people know we are a Christian? By our attitudes and our actions. By the fruit we bear.

Here is what Paul said is the fruit of the spirit:

First 3 = feelings:
Love
Joy
Peace – feel happy and know things are ok

Then there are actions towards others:
Patience – wait calmly without complaining
Kindness – helping and loving others
Gentleness – thoughtful, calm, considerate

And then our inner values:
Goodness – beautiful
Faithfulness – reliable, trustworthy, loyal
Self Control – power over one’s own actions

The Fruit of the Spirit Song

The Fruit of the Spirit's not a watermelon
The Fruit of the Spirit's not a watermelon
If you want to be a watermelon
You might as well hear it.
You can't be a Fruit of the Spirit.

'Cause the Fruit is Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness,
Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control.
Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness,
Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control.

(laminated basket and fruit that attach with velcro)

Do Not CONFORM, Be TRANSFORMED

Do Not CONFORM any longer to the pattern of this world, but be TRANSFORMED by the renewing of your mind. The kids loved them and they were pretty simple to do. (This is all thanks to my good friends Rachel H and Sharon B!!)

I called them "circle animals" because they were all based on circles/ovals. We cut out stuff for about 10 of each and then went up and down the halls and put them up. If you cut the heads and bodies out seperately then you can make the animals face different directions to make things a little more interesting. We used big rolls of paper. As you look at the pictures, I will try to explain a few details about each animal so that you can do this wherever you are!

The sheep is just one big oval going horizontal with some little humps to make it look woolly for the body and a smaller oval going vertical with some little humps in it for the head. The ears are curvy triangles or you could incorporate them into the head shape. Black magic marker for a little detail in the face and WaLah! This one does not have legs on purpose to make it look like it is laying down in the grass behind the fence. You could always put a big cotton ball tail on it to give it a little something.

The rooster is an oval shape horizontal for the body and circle for the head. Then add the red and orange details along with a marker for the black eye! What a cutie! You could use "real" feathers for the tail to give it more dimension or even a googlie eye.

I just loved the little chick. An Oval that is vertical for the body, a "real" feather for the little hair at the top. A triangle cut on a fold for the beak, and 2 black circle eyes. Add a little white piece of paper and the little wings for some detail and then little black pieces of paper or pipe cleaners and you have you chick!

For the cow you have 3 ovals. (maybe I should have called them oval animals instead of circle animals?) White horizontal for the body, white vertical for the head, pink horizontal for the nose. We added brown spots on some and black spots on some to give a little variety. Curved triangles for the ears. Half an oval for each hoof. Black magic marker for the face details. We took some strings of yarn and braided them to make the cutie tail!

For the pig you have a big circle for the body, a little smaller circle for the head, and an even smaller circle for the nose. We used black paper for the eyes and nostrils but you could just do magic marker if you wanted. Curved triangles for the ears. Half circles for the hooves and a curled pink pipe cleaner for the tail.

The horse!! 3 ovals. Dark brown horizontal for the body, dark brown vertical for the head, and a lighter brown horizontal for the nose. Black paper details for hair. (we joked that the top hair, when cut out by itself looks like a mustache!) Black magic marker for the face details. Curved triangles for the ears. 4 straight long brown rectangles for the legs and then we colored black at the bottom of them for the hooves. If student correctly answered the question, they were awarded a chocolate coin and given a chance to choose a number and try to find the lost sheep. They really got into my making a "buzzer" sound when they did not find the sheep and only found an "X". Of course, I really played it up and pulled the numbered card out very slowly to build the suspense. Even after the sheep was found, we continued playing until all cards had been uncovered and each child had earned a coin. You can see it here. Unfortunately, I don't know how to add the actual presentation. I have pictures stacked so you will only be able to see the last picture and you can't see the animation but, at least, you can get an idea.

The kids really get into watching the computer and the animation. We try to utilize power point or a video from time to time.

Here's my outline of the "script" as we went through the presentation:

We’ve talked a lot about God’s People, the Israelites. We would like to think that God’s people remembered how God:

Promised Abraham he would be the father of a great nation and gave him a son – Isaac

Isaac had a son named Jacob. Jacob’s name was changed to Israel. Jacob had 12 sons. One of his sons was Joseph

Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers. Joseph wound up in Egypt and later, his brothers and father came to live with him in Egypt. God’s people (the Israelites) grew and grew and the Egyptians made them slaves. God’s people were very sad and wanted to leave Egypt.

The Egyptian ruler, Pharaoh, was afraid the Israelites were so large that they might want to make one of their boys the king so he ruled all the male baby boys were to be drown. One Israelite baby boy was saved – Moses.

When Moses was grown, God helped him lead the Israelites out of Egypt to go to a land God promised them.

God took care of the Israelites when they left Egypt:

Parted the sea

Provided food and water

Helped them capture cities like Jericho

Gave them laws/rules to live by (10 Commandments)

Even with all of this, some of the Israelites did not do what pleased God and so they had to wander in the wilderness for 40 years before God brought them to the promised land

After Moses died, Joshua led the Israelites and they settled in the promised land.

After they settled, at first they were ruled by Judges who would settle disputes

And then, the Israelites wanted a king like other nations and so they were ruled by Kings. We have talked about King Saul, and King David, and King Solomon. Each ruled about 40 years

When Solomon was King, he was blessed by God with wisdom and he also was a great builder. He built the temple in honor of God in Jerusalem.

A lot of the Israelites again forgot what all God had done for them and began to practice evil habits and not following God. They did not repent and ask God to forgive them for this. Godwarned them that if they did not repent, they would be punished. They did not.

So God allowed the nation of Babylon to conquer part of the Israelite’s land and God’s people come under the rule of the Babylonians and their King, Nebuchadnezzar. (Remember wetalked about Daniel and King Nebuchadnezzar last week?) The Israelites were carried awayas captives and Jerusalem was left in ruins and the temple was destroyed and the articles in the temple were taken away. This time in the history of God’s people is called the Babylonian Captivity

During this time, there were men called prophets. A prophet was someone that God chose to tell His people things. God appeared to or spoke to these prophets and then they would tell the people what God said.

While the Israelites were in Babylonia, they were not happy (kind of like Egypt?) and they wanted to go back to Jerusalem. God spoke to a prophet named, Jeremiah. He told Jeremia to let the Israelites know:

They needed to settle into Babylon & make it their home for now

They would be in Babylon for 70 years

After the 70 years they would be allowed to return to Jerusalem

There would be a sign that would tell them that they would soon be returning to Jerusalem - the Persians would be in control instead of the Babylonians

After 70 years of captivity in Babylon, God fulfilled His promise. The King of Persia, King Cyrus, conquered Babylon and took control of Babylonia. King Cyrus allowed any of the Israelites that wanted to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple. Cyrus also told any that were not going to go back to Jerusalem they should provide the ones going back with items they would need for the journey and for the rebuilding of the temple.

Here’s some lessons we should learn from reading about these people in God’s word, the Bible:

God keeps His promises – always.

God wants us to obey Him - always.

When we do things that are not as God wants us to do, God wants us to repent (not just say sorry, but sorry and CHANGE)

God will forgive us when we ask Him to

God expects us to forgive others like He forgives us

Just because you are sorry, doesn’t mean you will not have to deal with the consequences(punishment)

Daniel

Started the class with a discussion of "reputation" and the "reputation" of animals pictured.

This was a fun activity. - "Do Right"

Opening Activity - Talk about: "What would you do if you were king? What are some rules you would make?"

Lesson:

Intro: We have been talking about some of the Kings over God’s people. Can you name them? Some of the Kings were good kings and some were wicked kings. Some followed God and some did not. We are going to talk about both today – good and bad rulers.

II Chronicles 24

A long, long time ago the country of Judah was ruled by a wicked king - JEHORAM – and his wife, the queen – ATHALIAH. Athaliah wanted the king to worship idols and be disobedient to God. When King Jehoram died, his son, AHAZIAH, became king and rules only a short time before he was killed. Usually when a king died, his son would become king. Ahaziah had several sons and one of his sons was about 1 year old. His name was JOASH.

But when Ahaziah died, Athaliah was very selfish and decided that she, the Queen, should rule. She commanded the officers to kill all of the sons of King Ahaziah so that she could rule Judah.

Without the wicked Athaliah knowing it, Joash’s aunt – JEHOSHABEATH – and his uncle – Jehoida – secretly took Joash, the baby son into their home.

Joash’s Uncle Jehoida was a priest and so Joash lived with them in the house of God, the temple. They hid him for six years from the sight of the wicked Queen Athaliah.

Joash’s Aunt and Uncle were wise and good people and wanted to follow God. While Joash lived with them, they taught him about God and about being good.

When Joash was 7 years old, Uncle Johoida began to make plans for Joash to become king because he was the only living son of the former king. Jehoida asked many of the guards to help him and they gladly did.

The guards and soldiers came to the temple to make plans and Johoida gave them spears and shields that were kept in the temple. These were the spears and shields that once belonged to David. They wanted Joash to become king because they knew he would follow God when he was ruler.

Many guards and soldiers took their positions inside and outside the temple doors to protect Joash from wicked queen Athaliah.

The little boy, Joash, was being guarded all the time and the guards and soldiers made sure no one harmed him when he became king even though he was not yet old enough to rule the people without help.

When the time was right, Jehoida brought out the king’s crown and arm band and placed them on the seven year old boy, Joash. He anointed him king of Judah and said’ “God save the King”. All the people gathered together and were very happy.

When Queen Athaliah heard this, she became very angry and ran to the temple. Since Joash had been anointed king, the soldiers were commanded to take Athaliah out of the temple and kill her. While Athaliah ruled she wanted the people to worship idols and there were a lot of idols in the country. With Athaliah gone and Joash was king, the people tore down a lot of the idols.

While Atahliah ruled and she encouraged the people to worship idols, the temple was neglected and needed a lot of repairs and a lot of things had been removed from the temple. Joash wanted to repair the temple.

Joash placed a chest at the temple. When the people came to the temple, they would put money in the chest. When there was a lot of money in the chest, Joash gave the money to the priests and they hired workers to repair the temple and have things made for the temple out of silver and gold.

Visuals:

I used pictures mounted on cardstock to tell the story. I wrote the “script” on the back so I could read it while holding the pictures up. The pictures came from an old (copyright 1963) story / coloring book I used many, many years ago. It’s from the “Character Building Stories” Joash, the Boy Who Became King; Dunkin Visual Aids Company; Distributed by Oklahoma Christian College Bookstore. Artwork by Peggy Lane. (I tried to find it online but cannot find it – probably out of print.) I pretty much followed the story in the book but changed it up a bit.

(Here's a copy of the front and back of the book - Don't know if you can see the price - .85 cents!!! studying and researching for this lesson, here are some other items I found:

Joash Poem

There was a young man name Joash,
His aunt and uncle did hide.
Not even the people knew,
There was a king inside.

By the time Joash was seven,
It was time to let the secret out.
They crowned him and gave him a book of law,
Long live the king the people did shout.

When Joash grew up he did see,
That the temple was in need of repair.
So they made a wooden money box,
And said, “Place it by the church door, there.”

When the people cam to the temple,
They dropped their money inside.
The temple was clean and fully repaired,
And the people were filled with pride.

They came to God and thanked Him,
For all that He had done.
They knew the church was special,
And always lots of fun!

(adapted from a poem by the Adventist church)

Chest with lid that opens can be found here:
www.mssscrafts.com/crafts/treasurechest/ctreasurechest.htm

Song: King Joash
(Tune: Jesus Loves Me)

King Joash was 7 years old when
He became the King of Israel
King Joash saw God’s house needed repairs
So he built a chest that was made out of wood

Yes, the temple was made pretty
Yes, the temple was made pretty
Yes, the temple was made pretty
Where the people worshipped God.

The chest was set at the temple door
Where people gave money as they came to worship God
When the chest was full, the money was emptied
And the builders were paid for the work they had done.

Yes, the temple was made pretty
Yes, the temple was made pretty
Yes, the temple was made pretty
Where the people worshipped God.

Song: Temple is Falling Down
(Tune: London Bridge)

Our temple is falling down, falling down, falling down
Our temple is falling down
Let’s help fix it up.

Fix it up with hammers, hammers, hammers,
Fix it up with hammers,
Let’s help fix it up!

Fix it up with saws, saws, saws…..
Fix it up with paint brushes, paint brushes, paint bushes…

Now the temple’s all fixed up, all fixed up, all fixed up
Now the temple is all fixed up
We’re happy as can be.<div Do you remember David’s father’s name? (Jesse) and do you remember who David’s great, great grandfather was? (Obed, son of Ruth and Boaz). David was a great king and he had a son named SOLOMON..

When David died, Solomon became king and he was very young. Being the King over God’s people was a lot of responsibility and Solomon was young and did not have a lot of experience in being a King. But Solomon, like his father David, loved and trusted God and knew God would help him.

Solomon worshipped and obeyed God. Once Solomon and his people went to the tabernacle in Gibeon and in front of the tabernacle, they offered a thousand burnt offerings to God.

That night, God appeared to Solomon and said to him, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you”.

What would you say if someone said to you, “Ask me for whatever you want me to give you”?

Well, here’s what Solomon said. He told God that he had been kind to his father, David and to him by allowing him to be King over God’s people. And Solomon said that the number of God’s people were as many as the dust of the earth……..HOW MANY IS THAT?????

Solomon then told God what he wanted God to give him. He asked God to give him WISDOM and knowledge so he could be a good king and lead God’s people.

What do you think Solomon could have asked for? What do you think God thought about Solomon’s request?

God was very please with Solomon’s request because his request was not a selfish request. Solomon did not ask for:

Wealth

Riches

Honor

Death of his enemies

Long Life

SO, God gave Solomon what he asked for AND God also gave him:

Wealth

Riches

Honor …………. More than any other King before him had had OR any King
after him would ever have.

With God’s help, Solomon was a very wise King and with his wealth, Solomon became a great builder and built wonderful buildings; one was a temple.

In the Bible, we have some of the wise teachings of Solomon in the Book or Proverbs. Proverbs means:

–noun
1. a short popular saying, usually of unknown and ancient origin, that expresses effectively some commonplace truth or useful thought; adage; saw.
2. a wise saying or precept; a didactic sentence.
3. a person or thing that is commonly regarded as an embodiment or representation of some quality; byword.
4. Bible. a profound saying, maxim, or oracular utterance requiring interpretation.

Here’s some Proverbs about being wise or wisdom:
(We wrote each of these on a card and added them in the card holder (I got at Dollar Tree) as we talked about them)

Prov. 3: 7 – Do not be wise in your own eyes, fear the Lord and shun evil

Prov. 9:10 – The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom…

Prov. 16:16 – How much better to get wisdom than gold….

Prov. 3:5 – Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding

Activity:
Here's our trading card for this week from the purchased curriculum we use. On this one they write their name and then "will make wise choices like Solomon":

Then we let them make an owl to take home for their room to remind them to make wise choices. We printed small return address labels with "BE WISE LIKE SOLOMON" and each of the Proverbs we had talked about.

We pre-cut the owls and scored them where they should be folded. The students folded the owls, we applied adhesive with a glue tape runner, and then the students put the stickers on their owl.
<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Battle with the Philistines- enemies of Israel

Champion of Philistines army - Goliath

9 feet tall, wore a helmet and a coat of armor

Goliath shouted to the Israelite army to send someone out to fight him. Losing side would serve winners.

III.David took challenge

David trusted God to help him

David chose five stones and his sling as weapons

David slung sling and hit Goliath in forehead

Philistines turned and ran

IV. King Saul was pleased by David's bravery

Made David an officer in the Israelite army

David led the troops well and became a hero

V. King Saul became jealous and plotted to kill David

Jonathan, Saul's son warned David

David hid in the desert and King Saul never caught him

VI. All the other students know where the treat is. The student who did not see, can ask the other students questions to try and find the treat. They must decide if they trust the information given when choosing the cup they think the treat is under.

After the activity, talk briefly about trust and who is the one person we can always trust.

Lesson

Intro: After the Israelites took possession of the land God had promised, the tribes settled in different areas (show map of the land occupied by the 12 tribes - I printed this map from Google Images). Today we are going to talk about one of the Israelite families and I want you to listen for times they trusted God.

I. Family lived in Bethlehem
- Elimelech and wife, Naomi
- 2 sons - Mahlon and Chilion
- Famine in Bethlehem so family moved to Country of Moab

II. In Moab
- Elimelech died
- Sons married Moabite girls
- - Mahlon & Ruth
- - Chilion & Orpah
- Sons died
- Left 3 sad women

III.Naomi decides to go back to her homeland, Bethlehem
- Naomi told Ruth and Orpah to stay in Moab & go back to their families house
to live
- All sad & cried
- Orpah agreed and when back to her family
- Ruth insisted that she did not want to leave Naomi and said she would
- - Go where you go
- - Live where you live
- - Your people will be my people
- - Your God will be my God
- - Die where you die

IV. Back in Bethlehem
- Needed food
- Ruth went to a field where they were gleaning grain
- Owner of field, Boaz, saw her and asked who she was
- Boaz told overseers of his field to let Ruth glean in his fields
- Ruth went every day to Boaz's field to glean

V. Boaz and Ruth Got Married
- Had baby - Obed

VI. Trust:
- Elimelech takes family to Moab
- Naomi's husband and sons die
- Ruth goes with Naomi to land she doesn't know

VII.Why is this story so special?
- Matt 1:5
- Draw "Family Tree" on board - showing Ruth & Boaz - Jesse - David -
- - Solomon - - - - - - - - Joseph - Jesus

Visuals
Our kids LOVE seeing different kinds of visuals during the lesson. Joe and I try to mix up the kind of visuals we use so they don't tire of the same 'ole thing. This week I used simple character cutouts from Danielle's Place (link in sidebar), toothpicks taped to the bottom, and styrofoam to stick the figures in while telling the story. The cutout of Naomi had a happy and sad face which I glued together back to back and just turned it to the appropriate expression as we went through the lesson.

Activity
Our curriculum provides "trading cards" each week that the kids complete a sentence that shows how our lesson is applied to their lives. This week it is (childs name) will Trust God. We are collecting the trading cards in individual envelopes for them to have at the end of the quarter.

Fill in the blank review of Lesson from "Bible Story Puzzle 'n' Learn!"
